In 2019, my brother, Tom Grass, and I co-founded Grass & Co. Together, we were drawn to the healing power of nature and how time outdoors can positively impact both body and mind.
‘Inspired by nature’ was at the heart of our first Grass & Co. CBD products, and it continues to guide the business today.
Earlier this year, I lost Tom. He had struggled on and off with depression through adulthood. In February, he tragically took his own life. Tom was widely loved as a friend, brother, son, and uncle, and is deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Tom was much more than just an entrepreneur. He was a storyteller and a brilliant maverick with a unique sense of adventure. He fearlessly travelled the world on foot, bicycle and motorbike, and lived for long periods in Africa and India.
To celebrate his life and many talents, we have set up a writing prize in his name to encourage, help and reward committed, emerging writers from around the world.
The judging panel includes Tom’s literary agent and Managing Director of LBA Books, Luigi Bonomi, his mother Adele Grass, journalist and writer Tanya Datta, culturally curious globetrotter Neale Anderson and Steppes Travel managing director Justin Wateridge. It will be chaired by literary agent at Watson Little, Laetitia Rutherford.
We welcome submissions to the inaugural Tom Grass Spirit of Adventure Prize from anyone aged 25 or over, who is either unpublished or with no more than one publication. Writers can submit a short piece of fiction or non-fiction (up to 3,000 words) that evokes and captures the spirit of adventure.
